Celtics Assign Phil Pressey, Andre Dawkins To Maine Red Claws

In a somewhat surprising move, the Boston Celtics announced Thursday that they have assigned guards Phil Pressey and Andre Dawkins to the Maine Red Claws, the team’s D-League affiliate.

Dawkins’ assignment didn’t come as much of a shock — he’s in his second 10-day contract with the Celtics and has yet to play a minute for the big club — but Pressey’s was unexpected. This is the 23-year-old’s first trip to the D-League since he signed with the Celtics as an undrafted rookie ahead of last season.

Pressey has played in 31 games this season but has logged just 17 total minutes over the Celtics’ last six contests, including four DNPs. The move down to Maine might solve two problems at once — getting Pressey some playing time while also finding a part-time fill-in for former Red Claws stud Tim Frazier, who signed a 10-day contract Wednesday with the Philadelphia 76ers.

There’s a chance both Pressey and Dawkins could be back with the Celtics by the time they host the Sixers on Friday night.
