Larry Brown: Kentucky Could Make NBA Playoffs In Eastern Conference

As of Wednesday, the Kentucky men’s basketball team is better than the Boston Celtics.

If you heard anyone utter that phrase, you’d probably call them crazy. Yet that’s essentially what former NBA coach and current SMU skipper Larry Brown said during a press conference on the eve of the NCAA tournament.

OK, we get it. Kentucky is absurdly good this year. The Wildcats are a perfect 34-0 after beating Arkansas by 15 points in the SEC title game and are the odds-on favorites to become the first squad since 1975-76 Indiana to have an unblemished season.

UK coach John Calipari also served as an assistant under Brown at Kansas from 1983 to 1985, and Brown likely was giving some extra praise to his old co-worker while the two are in Louisville for their Round of 64 contests.

And yes, we know the NBA’s Eastern Conference is horrible this year, and your local high school team probably could beat the New York Knicks.

All that said, it’s pretty absurd to suggest that the Wildcats are better than at least seven NBA teams, including the Celtics, who have won seven of their last eight games and would miss the playoffs on a tiebreaker if the season ended today.

So Brown obviously thinks Kentucky will win it all, right? Yeah, pretty much.
