Matt Chatham: NFL’s Desire To Grow Overshadows Other Pressing Issues

The NFL has many, many issues, but sometimes, the only one it seems to worry about is figuring out how to grow its product.

This growth obviously comes in a variety of ways, but it’s no secret the league wants to physically grow, in terms of teams and in terms of footprint. There’s been talk for years about relocating or adding a team (or teams) to Los Angeles. A potentially historic move to London has been bandied about, too, and could be on the way.

Former NFL linebacker Matt Chatham wrote on FootballByFootball.com that the NFL says one thing — about prioritizing other issues — but somehow the desire to grow the league always seems to take precedence.

“At the end of the day,” Chatham writes, “does expansion create some unsavory issues and competitive problems that would seem to violate public statements about what the league says they prefer the league to be about?  Uh … yeah, most definitely.  But preferences will always take a backseat to growth when we look back on this ten years from now.  Book it, Danno.”
