Trouble continues to find the Kansas City Royals.

The Royals are arguably the American League’s best team, but they’re also probably one of the most hated, thanks in large part to ongoing incidents like we saw Sunday in Toronto.

The Royals and Blue Jays played a testy Sunday afternoon affair, which started early in the game when pitcher Edinson Volquez plunked Toronto third baseman and noted hothead Josh Donaldson. In Donaldson’s second at-bat, a changeup got away from Volquez and went up and in on Donaldson. That clearly upset Donaldson — despite the fact the pitch was a changeup. Home plate umpire Jim Wolf recognized the pitch and Volquez stayed in the game.

That would only be the beginning, as Jays shortstop Troy Tulowitzki was hit with a pitch and then Donaldson took another offering up and in. The Jays finally retaliated in the eighth inning, which led to the benches clearing.

Volquez was quick to voice his opinion of Donaldson after the game.

“He’s a little baby,” Volquez told reporters, per The Associated Press. “He was crying like a baby.”

According to Volquez, the Royals took exception with how Donaldson celebrated his home runs earlier in the series.

“He can’t take it,” Volquez said, per the AP. “I don’t know why. He hit a lot of homers in the first couple of games and he was pimping everything he does. Somebody hits you, you’ve got to take it, because you’re pimping everything you do.”

Donaldson, meanwhile, saw things a little differently, as you might imagine.

“Our guy loses a two-seamer and hits a guy in the knee when we’ve had four balls thrown at our neck the entire day and our guy gets ejected, it just doesn’t seem proper,” he said.

The Royals have already gotten into with the Chicago White Sox and the Los Angeles Angels this season.
