Brandon Spikes’ chances of playing in the NFL any time soon just got even worse.

The former New England Patriot was suspended by the NFL for the first four weeks of the season, ESPN’s Field Yates reported Tuesday, citing a league source.

Spikes is a free agent after his second stint with the Patriots ended abruptly. Spikes returned to the team during the offseason, but he was released June 8 following a hit-and-run accident, in which he eventually was found guilty.

Spikes was drafted by the Patriots in 2010 and played his first four seasons in New England. The linebacker spent 2014 with the Buffalo Bills.

Spikes wasn’t the only free agent reportedly suspended, though. Another ex-Patriot, Jermaine Cunningham, was suspended six weeks, according to Yates. The linebacker pleaded guilty in May to charges stemming from a “revenge porn” incident.

Free agents Mike Williams (six weeks), Jonathan Dwyer (three weeks) and Rodney Austin (six weeks) also were suspended. The reason for all five suspensions were not made public, according to the report.
