Christian Benteke Frustrated At LFC’s Failure To ‘Kill The Game’ Vs. Southampton

Christian Benteke has urged his Liverpool teammates to start killing games off in order to end a frustrating spate of recent stalemates.

Jurgen Klopp’s men were held to the eighth draw of their last nine outings in all competitions, as Sunday’s clash with Southampton at Anfield ended 1-1.

Benteke looked to have put the hosts on course for all three points when he headed powerfully home in the 77th minute, but Sadio Mane hooked the ball in four minutes from time to secure a share of the spoils for Ronald Koeman’s team.

And, although the No. 9 was pleased with certain aspects of the performance, he wants to see the Reds rediscover their ruthlessness and start winning again.

“We are frustrated today because, with what we showed, we deserved the three points,” he told Liverpoolfc.com. “(One goal) is never enough, you have to play until the whistle. We just let them get one chance and they scored.

“We showed some good things and now we just need to kill the game when we can.

“We are not far but I think it’s time to take more points.”

On his own impressive strike, the half-time substitute added, “As a striker it’s important to score and every time I’m on the pitch I try to score and help the team.”

Benteke emerged from the bench in place of Divock Origi at the break to notch his third goal for Liverpool since his summer arrival at Anfield.

The Belgian might have had more strikes to his name if not for his recent absence due to a hamstring injury, and he is adamant that he has more to show once fully fit.

“(Injuries are) part of football, that’s why when you’re out you have to do everything you can to be back with the team. That’s what I did,” he continued. That’s what I’m working on now, training to be really sharp and 100 percent.”
