The New England Patriots opened spots on their 53-man roster and their practice squad Thursday.

The Patriots waived defensive tackle Khyri Thornton from their active roster, a source said and the team later confirmed. They also released offensive tackle Brennan Williams from their practice squad.

The Patriots could activate wide receiver Brandon LaFell from the PUP list with their open roster spot. LaFell has been practicing this week and is eligible to return Sunday against the New York Jets.

Thornton was claimed off waivers from the Green Bay Packers on Sept. 6. Thornton was waived by the Patriots on Sept. 17, added to the practice squad and re-signed to the 53-man roster Oct. 1.

If Thornton clears waivers, he could take the open spot on the Patriots’ practice squad. He has been inactive in the three games in which he has been on the Patriots’ 53-man roster.
