The Chicago Bears might have to make some major changes if things don’t turn around in a hurry, and apparently no one on the roster is safe.
Bears general manager Ryan Pace will “consider all options” in potential trades to improve the team, even if it means shipping star running back Matt Forte, NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported Sunday.
“The mantra from Chicago has been that it would listen to almost anything, and that would include 29-year-old (Forte) making $7.1 million,” Rapoport wrote. “As one rival general manager described it, ‘They basically say, ‘Don’t be afraid to ask.’ ”
The Bears entered Sunday with an 0-3 record and an NFL-worst minus-59 point differential. Wide receiver Alshon Jeffery has played in only one game this season, while quarterback Jay Cutler missed last Sunday’s contest with a hamstring injury.
Chicago already has made a few big moves so far, dealing linebacker Jon Bostic to the New England Patriots and sending Pro Bowl defensive end Jared Allen to the Carolina Panthers in two rare in-season moves. Yet it appears the Bears aren’t leaving anything off the table, especially when it comes to Forte, who will become a free agent after the season.
Unfortunately for Chicago, an NFL general manager told Rapoport it’d be difficult for the Bears to receive much value for Forte, given his “age and salary.” But it appears Chicago won’t be accused of a lack of trying.
