FOXBORO, Mass. — Injuries have depleted the New England Patriots’ roster this season, including at running back.

Dion Lewis was the primary back until his season ended prematurely after an ACL injury. While that loss was a big one for New England, it still had LeGarrette Blount in the backfield until he reportedly suffered his own season-ending injury Sunday.

That led the Patriots to sure up their depth at running back Tuesday by adding Montee Ball to their practice squad. Ball hasn’t played since being released by the Denver Broncos on Sept. 6, but he fills a glaring hole on New England’s roster.

“One part of it is the overall depth at the position, but he has some experience, has some ability in the running game and the passing game, good sized back,” Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said Wednesday. “We’ll see how it goes. Haven’t had him before, so we’ll see how it goes.”

Ball, a second-round pick by the Broncos in the 2013 NFL Draft, has 175 carries for 731 yards with five touchdowns in 21 career games.
