The Chargers will remain in San Diego for the 2016 season and possibly even longer.

Owner Dean Spanos released a statement Friday night addressed to Chargers fans, and it detailed the team’s plans for the upcoming season and beyond.

“Today I decided our team will stay in San Diego for the 2016 season and I hope for the long term in a new stadium,” he wrote.

However, staying in San Diego isn’t the Chargers’ only option. Spanos said his team and the Los Angeles Rams agreed to a deal that could see the Chargers playing in L.A. as soon as 2017.

“We have an option and an agreement with the Los Angeles Rams to go to Inglewood in the next year, but my focus is on San Diego,” Spanos said in the statement. “This has been our home for 55 years, and I want to keep the team here and provide the world-class stadium experience you deserve.”

The Chargers, Rams and Oakland Raiders all tried to gain the NFL’s approval to move to Los Angeles earlier this month, but the owners voted in favor of the Rams’ plan. The Chargers were given the first opportunity to negotiate a deal to share the future Inglewood stadium.
