The Internet can be a cruel, cruel place — especially for female sportswriters.
The podcast “Just For Sports” posted a pretty intense video demonstrating exactly what women in sports media must deal with online on a daily basis. In the video, men read mean tweets to sportswriters Julie DiCaro and Sarah Spain, and those tweets run the gamut from discrediting the women’s worth in the industry because of their gender to outright threatening them with physical and sexual violence.
Yeah, it’s bad. Really bad.
The video is both powerful and unsettling, as the men (who are actors, not the authors of the tweets) noticeably struggle to utter the vitriolic words while sitting face-to-face with DiCaro and Spain.
But don’t just take our word for it. Watch the video, as uncomfortable as it might be. For female sportswriters, these tweets are an unfortunate everyday reality.
