FOXBORO, Mass. — The Patriots lost running back depth Tuesday when the Kansas City Chiefs signed Bishop Sankey off New England’s practice squad.

Sankey’s agent, Jason Bernstein, announced the signing.

Sankey began the 2016 season on the Patriots’ practice squad, but opportunities for him to be called up to New England’s 53-man roster were becoming limited with James White playing well on third down and Dion Lewis back practicing. The Patriots signed running back Tyler Gaffney off their practice squad Saturday, but he wasn’t active in Sunday’s 41-25 win over the Buffalo Bills.

Sankey must now occupy a spot on the Chiefs’ 53-man roster for three weeks, per NFL practice squad rules. The Chiefs are banged up at running back with Jamaal Charles returning slowly from a knee injury and Spencer Ware dealing with a concussion.

The Patriots still have White, Gaffney, LeGarrette Blount and D.J. Foster on their 53-man roster and Lewis on PUP. The Patriots must activate Lewis within the next 16 days.
