The Celtics and Lakers have met a record 12 times in the NBA Finals, with Boston winning nine times. Los Angeles has won three of the last four, though.
The Celtics recorded the first ever NBA Finals sweep when they hammered the Minneapolis Lakers in 1959. The C’s beat the Lakers seven times in the championship series from 1959 through 1969, but they never meet three seasons in a row.
The Lakers got some revenge in the 1980s, winning in 1985 and 1987 after blowing the 1984 series with a few heartbreaking losses (Games 2 and 4, specifically).
Celtics forward Larry Bird and Lakers point guard Magic Johnson not only saved the NBA in the 1980s with their battles and individual brilliance, they helped take the league’s best rivalry to new heights.
Bird and Magic made the 1980s the golden era of basketball.
