Despite his three Super Bowl rings, Tom Brady has never stopped playing with a chip on his shoulder after falling all the way to the sixth round of the 2000 NFL draft.
In ESPN’s upcoming documentary profiling the 2000 quarterback draft class, The Brady 6, Brady recalled the experience of waiting 199 picks to be drafted after expecting to go in the second or third round.
“It was hard,” Brady said. “I remember taking a walk with my dad and mom around the block.”
Then, he began to tear up.
“It was just a tough day, you know?” he continued. “I just remember being there with my mom and dad.
“Sorry about that,” Brady said after collecting himself. “You know, they were just so supportive of me. They take it as emotional as I do. Finally, when the Patriots called, I was so excited. I was, like, ‘I don’t have to be an insurance salesman,’ you know?”
