After spending 21 years in the NHL, longtime Dallas Stars forward Mike Modano announced his retirement on Wednesday.

The 41-year-old announced his retirement through Twitter and Facebook, adding that he would elaborate during a Friday news conference.

On his Facebook page, Modano wrote, “After a long summer of thinking about my future, I’ve come to the decision that it’s time to retire as a player form the NHL.”

The Michigan native appeared in 1,499 games in his career and leads all American-born players in goals (561) and points (1,374).

Modano was drafted first overall in the 1988 draft by the Minnesota North Stars. He stayed with the team for 20 years, through the franchise’s move to Dallas. Modano won the Stanley Cup with the Stars in 1999.

After the Stars elected not to re-sign Modano, the forward left for Detroit, where he played 40 games in the 2010-11 season.
