Ronaldo irritated the local fans by putting his hand to his ear after scoring against Mallorca. Caparros thinks that this conduct is what makes the Portuguese striker lose the respect of fans who boo him in almost every stadium he visits.
“He needs to show a lot more humility and a lot more ambition in other things because as a player he has it all. The statistics are there to prove it but he loses all that in these type of situations,” said Caparros in an interview with Spanish sporting show Punto Pelota.
Caparros also thinks that Ronaldo’s actions make him less worthy of winning the FIFA Golden Ball award, which CR7 won in 2008.
“The Golden Ball is the sum of many values, like when they gave it to Zidane or Kaka. It’s the sum of a lot of things both on and off the pitch so it wouldn’t be strange if he didn’t win it,” added the 57-year old coach.
Caparros thinks Lionel Messi is without a doubt the deserving winner of this year’s Golden Ball award, while reminding that marketing also counts.
“In the end it is all about marketing and advertising,” he said, “and those that do it right will take the award, although Messi is far and away the best.”
