The tragedy that came to light Saturday morning involving Jovan Belcher and his girlfriend has saddened many people, including those who knew Belcher from his college days.
Belcher, a New York native, attended the University of Maine from 2005-2008. The school released a statement about Belcher’s time with the team and his sudden passing.
Belcher’s former head coach, Jack Cosgrove, described Belcher as a “tremendous student-athlete.”
“His move to the NFL was in keeping with his dreams,” Cosgrove said in the statement. “This is an indescribably horrible tragedy. At this difficult time, our thoughts and prayers are with Jovan, [girlfriend] Kasandra [Perkins] and their families.”
In his four seasons with the University of Maine, Belcher recorded 293 tackles and 18 sacks.
