Chris Perez Had Six Ounces of Marijuana, Three Pipes Seized From Home in June Sting Operation

Chris PerezBeing a closer in Major League Baseball is all about keeping calm under the most pressure-packed circumstances. So how has Indians reliever Chris Perez been able to coolly save 117 games over the course of his career? We may now know how he deals with that stress.

Back in early June, we reported that Perez and his wife, Melanie Perez, had been charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana after police intercepted a package containing the drug that was addressed to the family dog. Some details — including that Perez admitted to personal marijuana use and to having various paraphernalia in the house — emerged at the time, but more specifics are now coming out.

Perez and his wife were in court Tuesday, and at that time three warrants relating to the case were unsealed, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Among the details are that six ounces of marijuana were within the shipped packages, while another three grams were found in jars in the home. Additionally, police seized two pipes and a bong during a search.

An undercover police officer initially delivered the package to the home, and confirmed that the package was addressed to the dog. Perez and his wife then went out for dinner and a movie, leaving their two children in the care of a babysitter. When they returned, police and postal inspectors had already served the warrants and were searching the home.

On Tuesday, Perez and his wife were officially charged with drug abuse, a fourth-degree misdemeanor, and plead “not guilty.” The charge carries a maximum of 30 days in jail and a $350 fine. The couple are next scheduled to appear in court Sept. 3.

All of the warrants are available to view on the Plain Dealer’s website.
