Jacoby Ellsbury‘s transition to the other side of baseball’s greatest rivalry was completed Friday morning.
The center fielder, who left the Red Sox to sign a seven-year, $153 million contract with the Yankees, was officially introduced to the New York media at a press conference at Yankee Stadium.
“You are going to make my job a lot easier,” manager Joe Girardi told Ellsbury from the podium. “You are no longer a thorn in my side.”
With Ellsbury’s usual No. 2 already taken by Derek Jeter — and a lock to be enshrined in Monument Park as soon as the shortstop retires — he will instead wear No. 22 with the Yankees, the number previously worn by Roger Clemens.
