The U.S. men’s national team’s 2-1 win over Ghana in their first game of the 2014 FIFA World Cup was a really big deal.

Don’t believe us? Check out the countless videos of American fans celebrating wildly after John Brooks’ header put the U.S. ahead in the 86th minute.

Everyone watching Monday’s match got another reminder of magnitude of the World Cup stage when ESPN’s cameras revealed that U.S. vice president Joe Biden was on hand in Natal, Brazil, to take in the match.

Biden apparently was impressed with what he saw, as he went out of his way to pay a visit to the U.S. locker room and express his congratulations.

The vice president personally thanked members of the team, including goalkeeper Tim Howard, and posed for pictures with American stars Clint Dempsey and DaMarcus Beasley.

He even claimed that the vice president of Ghana, who sat next to Biden during the match, was cheering on the United States instead of her own team during the game.

The U.S. still faces two difficult group-play opponents in Portugal and Germany, but getting a visit from the vice president after its first game is a good start.
