The Boston Bruins announced the hiring of Joe Sacco as assistant coach Thursday. He replaces Geoff Ward, who will coach in Germany next season.
Sacco, a 45-year-old Medford, Mass., native, played college hockey at Boston University before enjoying a 13-year NHL career with five different teams. His most recent coaching job was as a Buffalo Sabres assistant last season.
Sacco also was the Colorado Avalanche’s head coach from 2009-10 through 2012-13, going 130-134-30. The Avalanche made the Stanley Cup playoffs as the eighth seed in 2009-10, but that was their only postseason appearance with Sacco behind the bench.
Sacco also was an assistant in the AHL for the Lowell Lock Monsters (2004-05) and Albany River Rats (2006-07). He was the Lake Erie Monsters’ head coach from 2007 to 2009.
