The Indianapolis Colts’ all-time sacks leader already was suspended for four games for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing substance policy. Now he’ll miss the rest of the season because of an Achilles injury sustained during a private workout last week in Atlanta, according to The Associated Press.

The 33-year-old led the NFL last season with 19.5 sacks, and his absence was noticeable in the Colts’ 31-24 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday night. The Indianapolis defense only sacked Peyton Manning once and was unable to force any turnovers with Mathis out of the lineup.

The linebacker is not allowed to make any contact with the Colts during his suspension, but head coach Chuck Pagano had provided a workout plan that Mathis was expected to adhere to during his time away from the team.

Mathis joins Vick Ballard as the second Colts player to be out for the season with an Achilles injury.
