Sidney Crosby is the latest NHL player to be diagnosed with the mumps.

TSN’s Bob McKenzie first reported Crosby’s diagnosis Sunday morning. The team confirmed the news in a news release shortly thereafter.

Crosby will be monitored daily, and specialists indicated he should be through the infectious period by Monday, the team said in the statement. He’ll be held out of Pittsburgh’s game Monday against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The mumps outbreak in the NHL has affected a few teams and a handful of players, but Crosby obviously is the biggest name to come down with the sickness.

The viral disease, which can be spread through exposure to saliva, can last one to two weeks. Questions about Crosby’s health popped up late in the week after the right side of his face was noticeably larger than the right, a sign of the disease.
