David Luiz wants others to play by his own rules.

Luiz wiped away the referee’s vanishing spray and tried to re-set it nearby Tuesday in the first half of Paris Saint-Germain’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea in the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic was lining up a free kick from the designated spot when Luiz intervened to the delight of the soccer world.

PSG’s David Luiz tries and fails to move the referee’s vanishing spray during his team’s Champions League game against Chelsea.

Luiz escaped punishment for his act of defiance, as neither the referee nor his assistants chose to caution the PSG defender. They probably didn’t see Luiz mark new territory.

Referees used vanishing spray at the 2014 FIFA World Cup to mark the point from which free kicks should be taken and where defenders should station themselves in dead-ball situations. Vanishing spray since has become increasingly common in top soccer leagues around the world.

Luiz couldn’t help Ibrahimovic score or set up a goal — as if he ever needs assistance — in this instance.
