Monday was a bittersweet day for St. Louis Cardinals fans.

The Cardinals returned to St. Louis for the first time since last season, as they made their home debut in front of one baseball’s best fan bases. However, Monday also represented one more chance to reflect on a life lost far too soon.

The return to Busch Stadium also marked the Cardinals’ first home game since the tragic death of Oscar Taveras. The 22-year-old died in a car crash in October while home in the Dominican Republic. Of course, the Cardinals paid tribute to Lynn with an emotional pregame ceremony, including a video tribute to the late outfielder. During that video, Cardinals pitcher Carlos Martinez was seen in a photo with Tavares.

Martinez was one of Tavares’ closest friends on the Cardinals, and looked to be struggling as he watched the video. Sensing this, teammate Lance Lynn put his arm around Martinez to comfort him.

It was a subtle, but touching moment.
