David Ortiz Out Of Red Sox Lineup For ‘Couple Of Days’ Amid Recent Slump

David Ortiz is going to get some time off in an attempt to find himself at the plate.

The Boston Red Sox designated hitter is struggling mightily this season, and manager John Farrell said Thursday on WEEI that Ortiz will get a couple of nights off in an attempt to find his swing, per the Boston Herald.

Ortiz slumped his way through the Red Sox’s three-game series with the Minnesota Twins where he went 1-for-12, and his batting average is now down to just .212. The 39-year-old has just six home runs and 21 RBIs this season, and his OPS is down to .679. He’s just 3-for-31 in his last eight games.

Ortiz’s absence ultimately could be a good thing for someone like Hanley Ramirez. One would imagine Ramirez will serve as the DH for the games Ortiz sits, which, at the very least, will make the Red Sox a better defensive team. Ramirez — who is hitting .210 with one RBI in May — could also benefit from getting off his feet for a couple of nights and focus only on hitting.
