The New England Patriots have experienced plenty of success with Tom Brady at quarterback. But one coach who sometimes has given them fits is Rex Ryan.
The former New York Jets coach blasted onto the scene in 2009 and upset the Patriots 16-9 in just his second game. The Jets went 3-2 against their AFC East rivals in their first two seasons under Ryan, including a 28-21 road win in the 2010 AFC divisional round. That early success went away, though, as New England continued to compete for championships while New York faded to the back of the pack.
The Patriots went 9-4 against Ryan before he was fired by the Jets after the 2014 season, and coach Bill Belichick noted that success Wednesday during a conference call with the Buffalo media.
“I think our record against him has been OK,” Belichick said. “I’ll take it.”
Ryan, of course, now is the coach of the Buffalo Bills, who will host the Patriots on Sunday.
While the Jets did have some success against Brady, the three-time Super Bowl MVP ended up with solid numbers against Ryan. Brady completed 59.7 percent of his passes and connected on 21 touchdowns while throwing just six interceptions against Ryan’s aggressive defensive schemes.
