Matt Cassel Re-Signs With Bills Just Three Days After They Released Him

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Quarterback Matt Cassel is back with the Buffalo Bills, and he’s taking over the No. 2 job behind starter Tyrod Taylor.

The Bills re-signed Cassel on Tuesday, just three days after the 11-year journeyman was among the final players cut by the team. Cassel was the odd man out last weekend after he lost a three-way quarterback competition to Taylor.

Cassel was scheduled to make a $4.15 million base salary in his previous contract. The Bills didn’t release the terms of Cassel’s new contract.

Bills head coach Rex Ryan announced Cassel immediately will step into the backup spot behind Taylor on Sunday, when Buffalo opens the season by hosting the Indianapolis Colts. That leaves former starter EJ Manuel relegated to the No. 3 spot.
