Well, we certainly didn’t see this coming.

Kerri Walsh Jennings will not win her fourth Olympic gold medal in beach volleyball, as she and partner April Ross were upset by the Brazilian team of Agatha and Barbara, who are ranked second in the world, in Tuesday night’s semifinal match.

The American team is ranked third in the world, but Walsh Jennings had never lost a match in Olympic history, and entering Tuesday had lost just two sets across four Olympic tournaments. But their fairy tale abruptly ended in Rio as Walsh Jennings and Ross lost in straight sets, 22-20 and 21-18.

Walsh Jennings and Ross will play again Wednesday for a bronze medal against the No. 1-ranked team in the world, Larissa and Talita, who also hail from Brazil but were upset in their semifinal match against Germany on Tuesday.
