Last season when Tom Brady went down, the Patriots turned to Matt Cassel. Without that luxury this season, the Patriots are in need of a reliable backup quarterback and it looks likes they will sign Cleo Lemon for insurance behind Brady.

Lemon, 29, worked out for the Patriots on Friday and could fill the roster spot vacated by punter Tom Malone, who was waived on Saturday. After negotiating on Saturday, a deal is expected to be announced, a Boston Herald source says.

Lemon played two games last season with the Jaguars and has also played for the Ravens, Chargers and Dolphins. In his career, he is 211-of-379 for 2,185 yards with eight touchdowns and seven interceptions.
