Report: Penny Claimed on Waivers Earlier in August It's been an odd 12 months for Brad Penny.

After serving as the Dodgers' Opening Day starter, Penny struggled in 2008, eventually being relegated to the bullpen in September. Then he joined the Red Sox, appeared to be the perfect trading chip, performed well enough for the team to keep him before falling apart in the summer and finding himself with another bullpen assignment.

The up-and-down year could have taken yet another turn, according to a new report.

Penny was placed on waivers by the Red Sox and subsequently claimed by an unknown team, WEEI.com reports. The Red Sox and the other team did not work out a deal in the allotted 48-hour window, so Penny was retained by the Sox. Because of that, the team was unable to trade Penny to any other team.

Penny is 7-8 with a 5.61 ERA this season. Among qualified starters, his ERA is the second-worst in the majors, second only to the Twins' Francisco Liriano (5.80).
