Varitek Sits, Ortiz and Drew Return for Series Opener

Jason Varitek drove in a run on an RBI double in the second inning Sunday night, but it wasn't enough to keep him in the lineup for Monday. The captain will sit to begin the game on Monday against the White Sox, marking the sixth time in the last eight games that he's not been in the starting lineup.

Additionally, David Ortiz and J.D. Drew both return to the lineup after sitting on Sunday. Drew came in to pinch hit in the ninth and walked on four pitches from Mariano Rivera. Ortiz, meanwhile, is riding a hot streak, going 11-for-28 with five homers, four doubles, nine walks and 13 RBIs in his last eight games. He sat Sunday night despite a .304 career average and two home runs against Yankees starter CC Sabathia.

Drew's return means there won't be a representative of Rhode Island on the field for both teams, as Providence's own Paul Konerko gets the start at first base for the White Sox, batting fifth. Rocco Baldelli, a Woonsocket, R.I., native, went 1-for-2 with a pair of RBIs on Sunday night.
