Bruins Extend Assistant General Manager Jim Benning

Bruins' assistant general manager Jim Benning has signed a multi-year extension according to general manager Peter Chiarelli, who made the announcement on Wednesday.

Benning has been with the Bruins four the last four seasons, serving as the assistant general manager for the last three. He began his B's tenure as the director of player personnel in 2006.

“Jim plays a critical role in our management group,” Chiarelli said in a statement. “He takes a very aggressive and proactive approach in his recommendations and assessments underscoring his tremendous management ability and experience. His player evaluation is amongst the tops in the industry and his business acumen supplements our group greatly. We were very fortunate as an organization to hire him in 2006 and we are even more fortunate to secure him for the long term.”

The former NHL defenseman spent 12 seasons with the Buffalo Sabres organization, including eight years as the team's director of amateur scouting. Benning was drafted sixth overall in the 1981 NHL draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs and went on to play nine years with the Leafs and Canucks.
