Bullpen Management Crucial Down the Playoff Stretch

Red Sox manager Terry Francona is no stranger to playoff fever around these parts. Since beginning his tenure in Boston in 2004, his squad has made the playoffs in four of his first five seasons (missing out in 2006).

Francona's steady hand puts him in good stead as the team's magic number shrinks to 15 (any combination of Red Sox wins and/or opponent losses for the Sox to reach the playoffs). With Francona resting starters periodically and trying to keep his bullpen fresh, he has his sights set on taking the team deep into the playoffs.

Nevertheless, questions still remain.

The Red Sox begin a three-game series with the Angels at Fenway Park on Tuesday night, and Daisuke Matsuzaka gets the call. Matsuzaka, who was put on the disabled list in mid-June, has had mixed results in his rehab starts, but the team feels that he has successfully completed his strengthening and rehab sessions and will be ready for this evening's start.

Matsuzaka's success may well depend on Francona's use of the bullpen and the leash he gives his starter. The Angels lead the AL West by six games over the Rangers, Boston's main wild-card contender. With the day off on Monday, members of the Red Sox’ bullpen should be rested and in good shape to bail out Matsuzaka, should he find himself in trouble in the early going. Francona's management of the rotation and bullpen will be crucial as the team heads into the final weeks of the regular season.
