The reign of the new No. 93 in the Patriots' locker room lasted less than a week as the team released linebacker Prescott Burgess and signed defensive lineman Terdell Sands on Monday.

Sands is a monster among men, standing at 6-foot-7 and weighing in at 335 pounds. The seven-year veteran spent one season with Green Bay before moving on to Oakland from 2003-08. He's recorded 129 tackles, four sacks and one unlikely interception. He played all 16 games in each season from 2006-08 but was released in September.

Burgess joined the Patriots last week after the team traded for him from Baltimore.

Though Bill Belichick wouldn't comment Monday morning on the extent of the injury suffered by defensive tackle Vince Wilfork, Sands seems to be a player that can have an impact on the defense with or without Wilfork.
