The Giants are 3-0 and atop the NFC East, looking to make a run at their fifth straight postseason appearance and a trip back to the Super Bowl. But if the Giants are going to return to the top of the football world, they are going to have to do so without safety Kenny Phillips.

According to Phillips' official website, the Giants safety underwent knee surgery this week, which will sideline him for the rest of the season. Phillips was placed on season-ending injured reserve with patellofemoral arthritis, and he had a microfracture surgical procedure to the trochlea performed by Dr. James Andrews.

"This kind of injury takes a long time to heal," Phillips wrote on his
site. "It’s a long process, I can’t even run for 4-5 months. It’s going
to be a while before I’m back to 100 percent."

Some experts and orthopedic surgeons believe the condition has the potential to end Phillips’ career, the New York Daily News reports.
