The injury bug threatened to hit the Red Sox early in Fort Myers, Fla. But Adrian Beltre escaped trouble after stepping on a baseball and tweaking his left ankle, ESPN.com reports.

The mishap happened Wednesday as Beltre attempted to deflect a ball with his mitt during a drill at the team’s spring training complex. He whiffed and then stumbled over the ball.

“It was weird,” Beltre told ESPN.com on Friday morning. “But it’s much, much better. I’m glad it’s not as bad as it looked. I took it a little slower today, and thankfully, it was nothing serious.”

Beltre has been restricted to hitting in the cage indoors the past couple of days, but intends to return in a full workout on Saturday.
