Derek Jeter Proves His Defensive Worth to Yankees Communication and honesty are the keys to success on any team, even the Yankees.

According to the New York Post, Brian Cashman met with Derek Jeter after the 2007-08 season in an effort to get the shortstop to improve his defense. Cashman says Jeter takes pride in his glove work.

"The player Derek is, he took to it and said, 'Watch, I will prove you wrong,'" Cashman told the Post.

Cashman's honesty has seemingly helped Jeter, as the Yankee captain’s defensive numbers have improved in each of the last two seasons and he even won the American League's Gold Glove at shortstop in 2009. It's fair to say that the 10-time All-Star has continued to prove his value with the glove, even at the age of 35.

The Yankees' shortstop may have the opportunity to prove his value on the free-agent market as well, as Jeter is entering the final year of a 10-year, $189 million contract. According to the New York Daily News, Jeter will address his contract situation when spring training begins.

"I only want to talk about it once," Jeter told the Daily News.

For now, the veteran shortstop is focused on repeating last year's performance.

"Our job is to try to win again," he said.
