Hot Dog! Kansas City Royals Mascot Sued Over Attack

John Coomer went to a Kansas City Royals game on September 9, 2009. All he wanted to do was watch a baseball game and have a good time. A free hot dog would have been a nice perk — if the hot dog hadn't been inserted into his eye instead of his mouth.

According to TMZ Sports, Coomer has sued the Royals over the antics of its mascot, Sluggerrr the Lion, during a stirring Royals-Tigers battle. Sluggerrr hopped up on the third-base dugout during the game and started firing hot dogs into the crowd. When the lion tired of the assault, he resorted to hand warfare, throwing hot dogs out with impunity.

It was then that "Slugger lost control of his throw or was reckless with his throw, and threw the hotdog directly into the Plaintiff," says Coomer in a lawsuit filed in Jackson County, Miss. (Notice the word 'into,' not 'at.') The hot dog reportedly detached the retina of Coomer's left eye and caused cataracts to develop.

Coomer is suing the Royals for negligence and battery and seeking over $25,000 in damages. The lawsuit contends that Kansas City "failed to adequately train its agents … in the proper method in which to throw hot dogs into the stands at Kauffman Stadium."
