Mike Eruzione squares off against Tim Wakefield in the first round of Boston’s Biggest Sports Legend tournament.
Mike Eruzione scored 92 goals in four seasons at Boston University, but it was his game-winning goal against the Soviet Union in the 1980 Olympics that will stand the test of time. A member of Team USA for the 1975 and 1976 Ice Hockey World Championship tournaments, Eruzione spent two seasons in the IHL before being named the captain of Team USA for the 1980 Olympics. His time as captain of Team USA is the reason Eruzione will be forever remembered as an important piece of American sports history. Just as his shot past Soviet Union goalie Vladislav Tretiak from the top of the circle assured a place for the Miracle on Ice in hockey lore.
There are very few pitching categories in the history of the Red Sox that don’t have Tim Wakefield listed in the top three. And if he isn’t first in one, he likely will be when his knuckleball finally stops getting out major league hitters. Wakefield leads the Red Sox in starts, is behind only Cy Young and Roger Clemens in wins, is second in games pitched to Bob Stanley, is second in strikeouts to Roger Clemens and is second all-time in innings pitched to Clemens. A staple of the Red Sox franchise for 16 seasons and counting, Wakefield has two World Series championships and an All-Star appearance under his belt.
