New York Yankees ace pitcher CC Sabathia lost his no-hit bid with two outs in the eighth inning in Saturday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Rays catcher Kelly Shoppach, a former Red Sox prospect, broke up the no-no with a single to left field in the bottom of the eighth inning. Sabathia immediately exited the game.
Sabathia walked two and struck out five, with the first walk coming in the fifth inning.
The big lefty had to dance around some trouble in the seventh. He walked Carl Crawford to begin the inning, then fielded a comebacker hit by Ben Zobrist. The throw was not in time, but Crawford slid past the bag and was tagged out, making the play a fielder's choice.
Sabathia then got Evan Longoria to strike out looking. After Zobrist stole second, B.J. Upton grounded out to third.
New York relief pitcher David Robertson has replaced Sabathia in the eighth inning, with the Yankees up 8-0.
