Red Sox in Dire Need of Jacoby Ellsbury’s Speed

Red Sox in Dire Need of Jacoby Ellsbury's Speed Apparently, everyone knows exactly where Jacoby Ellsbury's value lies.

The Red Sox speedster, who has been out since April 11 with cracked ribs, is well on his way back to the team. He successfully completed a rehab outing with Triple-A Pawtucket on Monday, going 1-for-3, and will be reevaluated by team doctors on Wednesday.

And while Marco Scutaro has done an admirable job filling in for him at the leadoff spot, Ellsbury is certainly missed.

Monday's kgb Poll Question asked what the Red Sox miss the most about their center fielder, and the overwhelming majority of 74 percent claim it's his speed. Twenty-two percent believe the Sox miss his defense the most, while just four percent say the team misses his offense — and that makes sense. Prior to Monday's game, Boston's bats haven't suffered, combining for a .268 average, fifth in the league, and 49 homers, second in the league.

In 2009, Ellsbury attempted 82 steals and was successful in 70 of them.

Tom Caron and Dennis Eckersley revealed the poll results on Monday's edition of Red Sox Extra Innings, but there's still time for you to vote. Text 'SOX1' for offense, 'SOX2' for defense, or 'SOX3' for speed on the bases to 542542. Results will be revealed later in the show and you can view the latest results and vote at NESN.com/kgb.

Throughout the 2010 Red Sox season, NESN and kgb are teaming up to offer Red Sox fans poll questions during NESN's pregame shows. Viewers of Olympia Sports presents The Boston Globe Red Sox Gameday Live are encouraged to text in their answer during the "NESN.com Question of the Day Powered by kgb" segment. Fans can text their answers to 542542. Votes are $0.99 each and standard message and data rates may apply.
