Italy Barely Ties Paraguay 1-1 Italy got off to a sloppy start in defending its World Cup title on Monday, playing to a 1-1 draw with Paraguay in each team’s first Group F match.

A miscue by Paraguay keeper Justo Villar allowed Italy midfielder Daniele De Rossi to score the game-tying goal from close range in the 63rd minute in front of 62,869 at Green Point Stadium.

De Rossi kept Italy out of the loss column when he slid and redirected a corner kick from Simone Pepe.

Scoring Breakdown

Paraguay defender Antolin Alcaraz opened the scoring on a header in the 39th minute, followed by De Rossi’s goal in the 63rd.

Notes
Italy lost its starting goalie, Gianluigi Buffon, after the first half due to an apparent back problem.

Even though Villar made a mistake on the game-tying goal, he did save nine of 10 shots for Paraguay.
