World Cup Day 12 Roundup: South Africa Becomes First Host Nation Eliminated in Group Stage Despite 2-1 Win Over France South Africa put up a fight against a frazzled French team, but in the end, neither team had anything to show for it. Meanwhile, Uruguay beat Mexico 1-0, with both teams advancing from Group A.

South Africa 2, France 1
In what has been a widely publicized dispute, the French team fell apart off the field, and on Tuesday, they didn’t do much better on it. France’s Yoann Gourcuff was ejected for elbowing Macbeth Sibaya in the 25th minute, leaving France to play with 10 men.

South Africa scored both of its goals in the first half — the first by Bongani Khumalo in the 20th minute and the second by Katlego Mphela in the 37th minute. Substitute Florent Malouda scored France’s only goal in the 70th.

Both South Africa and France were eliminated from the tournament. South Africa is the only host nation to not advance past the first round in 80 years of World Cup play.

Uruguay 1, Mexico 0
In a game with few scoring opportunities, Uruguay’s offensive power and strong defense earned the country a 1-0 victory over Mexico. Striker Luis Suarez scored the game’s only goal in the 43rd minute.

Mexico attacked on offense but failed to find the back of the net. Its best chance was in the 22nd minute when Andres Guardado bounced a shot from 30 yards off the underside of the crossbar.

The two countries went into the last group game sharing the lead at four points each. Both only needed a draw to advance.

Argentina 2, Greece 0
With a 2-0 win over Greece, Argentina improved to 3-0-0 and clinched Group B.

The game was scoreless until Martin Demichelis opened the scoring in the 77th minute. Martin Palermo added a tally in the 89th, and that was all Argentina needed, as Greece was only able to manage three shots on net the entire match.

Argentina will play Mexico in the round of 16, while Greece has been eliminated.

South Korea 2, Nigeria 2
After falling behind early in the match, South Korea held on for a tie against Nigeria, gaining its fourth point in Group B and advancing on to the round of 16.

Nigeria's Kalu Uche opened the scoring with a close-range shot in the 12th minute. But South Korea fought back, as Lee Jung-Soo scored in the 38th, followed by Park Chu-Young's tally in the 49th.

If it weren't for Nigeria's Yakubu Aiyegbeni netting a penalty kick in the 69th minute, South Korea may have held on to win. A tie, though, did send them to the next round, while Nigeria was eliminated.
