Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim right-hander Joel Pineiro was scratched minutes before Wednesday afternoon's series finale with the Red Sox. He suffered a left oblique strain while warming in the Angels' bullpen.

Reliever Scot Shields, who has had a rough year for Los Angeles, got the start, his first since 2003.

Pineiro entered the afternoon 10-7 with a 4.18 ERA. The former Red Sox reliever won seven straight decisions from June 6 through July 15.
