With no real timetable yet for the return of outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury, it makes sense that the Red Sox would be looking to add an outfielder before the July 31 trading deadline.

Apparently one player the Red Sox are looking at is Royals outfielder David DeJesus. FoxSports.com is reporting that the Red Sox and Royals had initial discussions about a trade 10 days ago.

The report says that talks aren't dead, but no names have been exchanged while the Royals continue to scout the Red Sox' minor leaguers. The teams will likely stay in contact up until the deadline.

The Red Sox will have to decide how much they're willing to part with in order to get DeJesus who is having quite a year. His .326 batting average is seventh-best in the AL and he has driven in 36 runs. Also, DeJesus has the ability to play all three outfield positions.

DeJesus would come cheap, financially speaking. He's making $4.7 million this year and has a club option for 2011 for $6 million. Those numbers in themselves make him a valuable commodity.

According to the report, a rival executive said that the Royals would want to "hit a home run" in making a deal for the 30-year old outfielder.
