White Sox GM Kenny Williams is known for coming out of left field and making big splashes.
Two seasons ago it was Ken Griffey Jr. and last year it was Jake Peavy. This year, he hoped that it would be Manny Ramirez.
After being frustrated by the Nationals' asking price for Adam Dunn, Williams decided to take a stab at Ramirez, who is on the DL in Los Angeles.
Manny has been solid for the Dodgers thus far, hitting .317 with a .925 OPS, but has been repeatedly injured this season.
They also recently traded for Scott Podsednik as Manny's insurance policy. By shedding Manny's salary — which the White Sox were willing to take on — they also would have given themselves a chance to make other moves.
Still, sources have said that Manny leaving L.A. is "not happening."
The Angels and Rays reportedly also inquired about Ramirez, but their overages received no warmer responses than Chicago's.
