FOXBORO, Mass. — Quarterback Tom Brady is two years and a day removed from the devastating left knee injury that briefly derailed his career.
Brady's newest teammate, safety Jarrad Page, remembers that day all too well. Page paired with Bernard Pollard as the Chiefs' two starting safeties Sept. 7, 2008. On Wednesday, Page was asked what he remembered from Pollard's hit.
"When you go into a game, your No. 1 thing, defensively, is you want to try to get to a team's backup quarterback, but no one is going to go out there and try to intentionally hurt a guy," Page said. "Unfortunately, [Brady] had a serious injury. I don’t think we really knew how serious the injury was. I knew he hurt his knee, but I didn’t know how bad it was until we realized he wasn’t coming back in the game.
"I actually didn’t even see the hit because I didn’t look at the replay or anything. I didn’t see the hit until after the game on SportsCenter later on. It definitely wasn’t a situation where you go out and try to hurt somebody, but when you blitz, you're always trying to get to the quarterback. He was trying to fight from underneath a block and get to him, and it was just a freak accident the way he stepped in."
