The Mets still haven’t announced who will take over as their next general manager, but at least they’re getting closer to a decision.

Either Sandy Alderson or Josh Byrnes – the two candidates with the most previous success as general managers — will be the team’s next GM, according to ESPN’s Adam Rubin.  Both will have another round of interviews early next week.

Alderson, the Oakland A’s GM from 1983-1997, has been considered the favorite to land the job from the beginning. He also has experience working in the Padres’ front office and with Commissioner Bud Selig.

Byrnes was the Diamondbacks’ GM from 2005-2010, and has also been the assistant GM of the Rockies and Red Sox. He was fired from his Diamondbacks job with five years left on his contract, meaning Arizona will have to help pay his salary if he signs with the Mets.

Rick Hahn of the White Sox, Allan Baird of the Red Sox, and Logan White of the Dodgers all interviewed for the position as well, but were informed they were no longer in the running Omar Minaya’s old job.  They also asked for permission to speak with Tigers’ assistant GM Al Avila, but were denied.
