ARLINGTON, Texas — The Texas Rangers reached the World Series for the first time, with Vladimir Guerrero driving in three runs and Nelson Cruz homering in a 6-1 win over the New York Yankees on Friday night in Game 6 of the AL championship series.
Guerrero hadn't driven in a run in the ALCS until an RBI grounder in the first inning of the clincher, the biggest victory in the franchise's 50 seasons. He added a two-out, two-run double in the fifth to chase Yankees starter Phil Hughes before Cruz followed with his fifth postseason homer.
Colby Lewis allowed three hits and one run in eight innings against the defending World Series champions.
Texas opens the World Series at San Francisco or Philadelphia on Wednesday night.
